Bluebird Trail Journal This web page will be updated when the Bluebird Boxes are monitored. 2002 Journal March 28th, 2002: Installed five Bluebird Houses. April 4th, 2002: Installed two additional Bluebird houses. Checked the five houses previously installed and there wasn't any nesting activity in the houses. I did not observe any Bluebirds in the Preserve. April 12th, 2002: Monitored all houses, had sparrows building nests in the Ward Road house and the Peterson house. I removed both of the nests. April 18th, 2002: Monitored all houses. There is one nesting Bluebird pair in the Peterson House, nest is about complete. Removed one sparrow nest from other boxes. Left three tree swallows nests in the boxes. April 26th, 2002: Monitored all houses. No changes from April 18th, 2002. May 2, 2002: Monitored all houses, No changes from April 18th, 2002. May 9th, 2002: Monitored the Peterson House, the bluebirds have completed the nest now awaiting the arrival of the eggs. May 16th, 2002: The Peterson house has two bluebird eggs in the nest. Several of the tree swallows nests have eggs in them. One tree swallow nest has 8 eggs in it. May 23rd, 2002: The Bluebird nest in the Peterson Box had been destroyed by a nesting pair of sparrows. They removed the bluebird nest and started building their own nest. The sparrow nest was removed from the house. June 7, 2002: Checked the boxes, and still have tree swallows nesting in six boxes, no bluebirds nesting at this time. October 18th, 2002: All boxes were cleaned out and disinfected. We did not have any bluebirds complete nesting at Stage's Pond this year. 2003 Journal March 12th, 2003: Installed a new type of Bluebird House on the east boundary of the preserve. Checked and cleaned all of the houses. March 17th, 2003: All houses checked, have bluebirds starting to nest in a house on the eastern boundary of the preserve. No other houses are being used. April 11th, 2003: All houses checked, bluebirds have just about completed their nest in the Peterson Box, the rest of the boxes being used by tree swallows. April 20th, 2003: The bluebird nest in the Peterson Box has 4 eggs in it.
May 30th, 2003: All four eggs have hatched, no photos of the baby bluebirds are available. July 15th, 2003: The nesting box was empty, all birds have left the nest. I have seen several bluebirds in the preserve. 2004 Journal March 15th, 2004: Cleaned out all bluebird boxes and repaired broken box near parking lot. April 29th, 2004: The bluebird nest in the Peterson Box has 4 eggs in it again this year. The bluebirds seem to prefer the Peterson Box to any others erected at Stage's. Photo of the eggs below.
May 16th, 2004: The eggs in
the bluebird nest have hatched and the birds are gone. The bluebirds are
starting a new nest in the adjacent bluebird box. May 25th, 2004: The bluebirds have laid 4 eggs inside the round PCV nest box. Photo of three of the eggs below.
June 6th, 2004: Three of the bluebird eggs hatched today. Photo of the baby bluebirds below.
2006 Journal - Due to personal issues there is not a 2005 bluebird journal 3-17-2006: Cleaned and repaired the Bluebird Boxes 3-27-2006: Moved one Bluebird Box out of a large patch of blackberry bushes and relocated it to the southwest corner of the preserve near Hagerty Road. 3-29-2006: Checked all Bluebird Boxes, and as yet no nests. It appears that several boxes have had some grass put in them for nest, but they have not been finished. 4-7-2006: Checked all Bluebird Boxes, and have a nesting pair in the Peterson Box near the parking lot. Two eggs in the nest. All other boxes un-occupied. 4-21-2006: Checked all Bluebird Boxes, have Tree Swallows nesting in two boxes, and the Bluebirds are nesting in the Peterson Box. There are five eggs in the Peterson box nest. 4-30-2006: All Bluebird eggs in the Peterson box have hatched. 5-20-2006: All bluebirds have left the nest. 2007 Journal No nesting bluebirds in boxes provided, they did nest in the pine trees and in the White Oak Woods. 2008 Journal 5-15-2008: Two nesting pairs of Bluebirds, eggs in each nest.
